Mitel: Latest SIP Handset 6873i

The 6873i is the latest SIP phone to come out of Mitel.
Well I’ve had this Mitel handset for about a week now, so it’s time to review it properly, warts ‘n’ all.
My initial thought as I unpacked it was “this looks and feels like quality”. It certainly has a good weight to it which make it feel substantial and robust. I was particularly impressed at the size of the screen – the large screen means setting it up (once we’d ironed out the issues below) was a joy to interface with as it provides big clear icons and simple menu structure.
On the point of the screen, I do have to point out that it’s quite shiny so our office lights reflect off the screen, however it doesn’t seem to cause a problem. The touch screen also works really well and I’ve not had any problems.
I would recommend that you check the compatibility of USB headsets as we have tried a range of headsets, and I can confirm that the Jabra Evolve 80 work really well (volume control, mute and answer/release) but any cordless USB device seemed to be rather temperamental. Which for a top of the range handset is disappointing.
Bluetooth: whilst this is a great feature we couldn’t get the handset to connect with any of the Bluetooth device we had in the office
We had a few issues getting it set up, however it turned out to be the way we had our existing SIP handset configured, once that was sorted, the set-up was straightforward.
Overall, it’s a lovely looking handset, useful features and well designed. So long as you don’t require a headset you’ll have no problems with this Mitel unit.
